Glen Cottage, Appletreewick near Grassington, Skipton and Bolton Abbey in the Yorkshire Dales by Designplay Architecture & Design. Computer generated image shows southern elevation of extension from the garden. Note the deeply inset windows to protect from overheating and driving rain, along with the flat roof linking section between original cottage and extension.

The project adds much needed living space to this cottage in the form of an open plan kitchen living area, that has large glazed doors and windows looking out over the countryside. This allowed the space where the kitchen formally inhabited to become a second guest bedroom. The form is simple, from the road it appears to be a single storey out building but as you step through the timber door into the linking structure between the two forms the building opens out into the garden and countryside beyond. The style is contextual, the local stone walls and roof are punctuated by a lead linking roof that goes on to frame the windows, a simple modern touch, rooted in its environment but an unmistakably modern intervention that gives this building its character, style and beauty.

Extension to a tiny dales cottage that takes advantage of the spectacular views over the valley and creates a beautiful light & modern living space.
